Yo ho ho and all that. I have made a seafaring sonic salute on Diesel U Music radio that is to be broadcast this evening.

Animal Collective

I saw the Animal Collective at Brixton Accedemy last week.
Flat.
Everything about their show (apart from the lights) was rather dull. I was expecting a more dynamic version of the tracks on their albums...shame really.
Probably better to see them at a smaller venue - but the place was 2/3 full and I saw a lot of people leaving early. Not only that, I was the only bloke there not wearing a lumberjack shirt (buttoned up to the neck naturally)

Wooden Shjips Set Sail

My good friend Brookheimer sorted out some tickets for Wooden Shjips a The Borderline last week. Thanks Brooksy.
Man, were they good. If you can imagine Hugh Laurie on bass, Rasputin on guitar and Noddy Holder on keys you are nearly there. Amazing sonics that just tranced along with little and then big flourishes. this band played like we weren't there. Not in a self centered way - morelike an unposturing 'deep in the sound' kind of way...Brilliant!
I hope all those at The Green Man festival last weekend saw them too

Apologies for the absence - the Speedwagon clan has gained a new member...Gloria (http://www.flickr.com/photos/15423891@N00/) (bravo Mrs Speedwagon!). Gloria is rather demanding but very charming. More about her later - check this lot out in the mean time!

This 3rd of Feb Mish Mash welcomed Spektrum (www.myspace.com/enterthespektrum) and Kid Carpet (www.myspace.com/kidcarpet) live in the main room. ACES! (Two of our favourite bands of late!). The Kid played some new tracks off his unreleased LP and Spektrum walloped out a sterling set of electro-bass funk with aplomb. We recorded their sets so will have a podcast available soon for you to have a listen to.

We also had the hot female duo 'Show Your Bones' (http://www.myspace.com/showyourbonesdjs)
warming things up in the bar with their indie rock n rave action and finally a new project from of two secretive and well known music aficionados hosting the back room under the moniker She Don’t Care (mmm who could that be in '07?)

Mish Mash at Cargo this coming saturday (5th August) is House Band launch night! Just like the cool all day buffet table seated joints in Vegas we got ourselves a HOUSE BAND! They will play a bit and then press the whigg-out button and jam with Oscar and I...should be cool. Better than that is Vatican DC who are playing too. They are rather spiky and leap about a lot - i have known their front man (Irish Steve) for some time and can let you know that his Mum is happy as he now has found something he is good at! really good at!!

I will get a few piccies of The House Band and Steve cavorting for the next installment - better rest your eyes until then.

The image above is of a few cats rockin down at Turnmills where i played a week or so ago - it was ace. Nice to chugg it out with some slow disco and then sock it to 'em with some more acidic and maximal sounds. Sir Roger of Sanchez was playing next door and he had smoothed off all edges leaving the crowd in euphoric states of you know what. I spoke to some dude who had cancelled his holiday to catch Roger's set...crikey! Zak Frost who invited me to room 2 did an excellent job as did Simon Acetone. I recommend that one for future.

But that was a while ago - more pressing is this Friday 4th August when Oscar and i play a little basement joint in the Cafe de Paris on regent St...swanky or what?

Crikey! what a spectacle - 'The Sultans Elephant' street theatre performance was great. Free and in the centre of London a couple of weeks ago.

We got down there just in time to see the girl get into her rocket wave goodbye to the elephant - no mean feet if you are 28 feet tall!

The styling of the event and loose nature of it all made it most intriguing - especially nice was the French space rock accompanying the procession - top notch!

The event was sorted out by these French cats called Royal De Lux

What a Cracker!

Phew!

Thanks to the Schwab Crew, Lois and Urban Delights for a top ranking Mish Mash this month.

The packed dance floor throbbed to Schwab's swampyness delivered from the floor and fed thro a myriad of video cameras onto the mega screen - it was like watching an old episode of The Old Grey Whistle Test - which is no bad thing!

The Urban Delights played a poppier set which went down quite well too.
Mish Mash's 'Speechless' single was well recieved also and laid a solid foundation for me and Oscar to rock the 'theque from.

Thanks to the bands and especially all the people who turned up tuned and and freaked out...wallop!

Gogol Bordello Go! man Go!

Hot on the lips of every trendy arsed Numpty the band Gogol Bordello played the Astoria last weekend...unlike all Numptys, i had the fortune of checking out the gypsy punks.
Bloody hell! What a gig - one of the best i have been to in London for years and years.
At first i was a little non plussed as it all sounded a little bit rinky dink 'we are gypsys but we like punk'...but then, as my foot started tapping, my neighbouring student ravers started egging the security guards to 'come and have a go i they think they're hard enough' and my fist started punching the air...i got carried away to the ska'd up balkan bashment that are the Gogols .
By the elongated finale with its tarrantello like speed and duration with the lead singer surfing the crowd whilst standing on his bass drum screaming into the mic in his hand i was a convert.
I have yet to check their LPs - but you must see them live!
To top it all - Eugene Hutz, the lead singer (a cross between Iggy Pop and Shane McGowan) hung out in the crowd for a chat afterwards - maybe he was looking for nymphettes to drag backstage? Not that he would have to drag that hard!

Here is My Robot Freind playing at Fabric the other weekend. It was a Friday night and the ace dudes from 'Adventures in the Beetroot Field' were running room 2 while Wall of Sound took care of the main room where i finally got to check out My Robot Friend.

Playing a jaunty set of electro pop while videoing himself from his flashing helmet MRF took the crowd by storm - One of his new tracks featuring a violinist with bug-like antennae which illuminated her face and fiddle was a high light.
I hung out with Deven Miles and his ace cycle fiend lady friend, Tim from the Lock and the marvellous Mo from the Glimmers.

A good night was had by all and i managed to talk grand pianos with a scots banker, swimming trunk design with a much slimmer Curly and festival plans with my ex producer from Kiss - Lady C.

I recommend Fabric to anyone who wants a big room night with small room bands - their programming is second to none and its just a short (if wobbly) ride home for me.

Mish Mash at Cargo this month was a smasher. The two bands, Headland and Coco Electric were really good. Headland (pictured on left) kept their freak flag flying with a heady blend of raw bass, synth and melodic vocal melange which got the crowd niceley ticking over.
Coco Electric were a bit more of a sedate affair with Anne's vocal bouncing niceley off Skylab's fret work. I was hoping their live set to be a bit more electronic but a few more gigs should enable this promising band to sort out the live mix and unleash the sound i have heard them create on disc.
Oscar's record selection was second to none and niceley laid a foundation for me to prance about on - a bit of bad cop, good cop with me ending the night with a shoe in the air and a packed club baying for a few more....next one is March 4th....this saturday.
Tunes of the night were Freak Flag from Headland, Sex Shooter from Coco Electric, the new John Tejada track from Oscar and from me it was Perfume by Sparks...megarifico!

Radio Speedwagon FINAL Playlist

Well, here it is after 182 shows - some 362 hours of mega music - the final Radio Speedwagon as it was on Kiss 100.

The selection has changed over the years and no two shows were ever the same. Here's to the excellent guest sessions from the likes of Miss Kittin, Goldfrapp, Scissor Sisters, Air, Andrew Weatherall, Kid Carpet, Tiga, and many more besides.

From electro pop to punk funk to acid house without a home; the traditional dance music genres got a good drubbing - and boy, do they deserve it.

Mish Mash with The Rumblestrips on Saturday!

I had a killer NYE playing at The Lock Tavern in Camden and did a walloping set on Kiss too - A proper way to bring in the '06.

Thanks to all at The Lock for sorting out a jolly knees up and thanks also to all the dudes who swung by for seeing in the big one. - no thanks to the dodgy cable that tripped the power a few times.

I then popped by the Bugg'd Out bashment at the T Bar after The Lock and stacked some boxes while a bevvy of Mega Jocks took care of business. That was a top notch sweat box - so swing by there next time it's on.

Winter Wanderland - Xfm

That Xfm got it right with their Winter Wonderland bashment at Brixton Academy in London. What a cracking line up spread over two nights. Ok, it is easy to put on a micro festival in London near Christmas because most bands are slowing their tours etc but, this was good.

We went on the sunday night and saw Editors, Maximo Park, Kooks, Hard-Fi and Dead 60's - had to leg it before the Karzee Chefs - but i heard them on the wireless the day after...pretty rockin.

Then i heard a bit of the monday's gig when Richard Ashcroft played....crikey! That man had the entire Academy in the palm of his hand - just him and his guitar...proper.

I thought Hard-Fi were pretty good live, Maximo Park were more 'stadium' than i wanted and Editors were best. All in all a quality night out - thanks Grozz and Lozz for the squeeze action.

Thanks to Xfm for sorting out a successful (totally sold out in 16mins!!!) night of top caliber bands. Great atmosphere - something to do with drinking for 7 hours?? - and the right way of giving something to the Shelter charity and 'the kids'! Maybe a few other broadcasters could carry the batton too?

Only one Juan Maclean

What a cracking set Juan Maclean did for us at Mish Mash last saturday at Cargo.

Not only did he build up sonic barrages of beauty but he stashed his cowbells down his trousers and got his cohorts to whack them at will - but he also rigged up some kind of sample trigger to his hand so he played keys, sang and whacked stuff to fire off handclaps and all sorts of other sounds.....bloomin genius!

His set of around fifty minutes played most tracks off his LP, Less Than Human, plus some extra stuff i was not too familiar with. Extra special track for me was Tito's Way which was superb and really got the crowd going. I got the set recorded so i hope to have it broadcast on the Radio Speedwagon show - failing that i will sort out some kind of podcast nib jib here on revmilo blog.

If you get the chance - go and see Juan Maclean and his band of dudes in hoodies who play like demons posessed you won't regret it. They play rock music in a dance way with peaks and troughs using tight rythms, solid synth sounds, whoomping bass with live disco claps and percussion - basically, music for the head, heart and feet.

See you down the mosh pit!

What a wally i am. Maybe i need glasses? Maybe i am experiencing 'mature moments'? Maybe i should not drink so much?

Why all this self beef i hear you ask? Well, i popped out last night to my freind Pete Herbert's birthday bashment in soho (The Player...home of quality disco action) and i bumped into a few old chums...One of which was the marvellous Judy who is always a becon of hope in the valley of rave. Of course, i managed to louse up the night by totally forgetting Judy's name and embarrassing both of us.

I have only one excuse for my lack of memory recollection skills and that being every time i have met Judy i have been rather pickled, it always being late in the night....So, from this day on i drink a bit less (failing that i photograph all i meet and practice the name game before going to bed)

Sorry Judy - it is always nice to se you! She is fourth person along from the left, top row on the link below (the cool one)

I was Noised!

What a jolly weekend. The Queens of Noize night at the 333 was good fun - No pics as my camera has gone for a Burton - It started off a bit slow but the Whoremoans DJ duo (apart from having a cool name and a good choice of tune) started to wind the pressure.
My mates Chode and Jo were there and cavorted about with drunken aplomb.
I played a set of rave-rock which went down badly...i stifled it as long as i could before the BIG ONES came out...you know...the Karzee Chefs, Fritz Ferdinand and the like.
Still managed to get a few indie rockers bogling to some dancehall - job done!

Extra mention to Ralph and the Ralphettes for their outfits and machine guns. Top marks to Shitdisco http://www.shitdisco.com/ and Supersystem for good live sets down in the 'dark room'.

Also, nice to chat with Suzanne from the band NoBra http://www.nobra.co.uk/ who i have seen for years but never spoken to - i look forward to seeing their band sometime.

THANK YOU for coming down the T Bar last night all you ace dudes! Yeah....ALL of you.

I hope you dug the slightly more rock n roll selection?

Thanks to Jamie and Derren for extending their welcoming arm of hospitality to myself and G-Force Fisher (the NoWave hero)

Talking of G-Force....really nice to hang with you again dude-king and thanks for being my sherpa extraordinaire. My fave track he played was Rock and Roll by The Velevet Underground (a new one on me). That and Viva Voce - Wrecking ball (this one is a bit like a soft Sonic Youth...ace)

Tracks that were enquired about were Jamie T (a one man band with guitar that sounds a tiny bit like The Streets), a Balaeric classic that G played by Temple Head - it took one listener back to the Whirlygig....ooooohh and a track called Miracles by Supersystem (who i saw play on wednesday at Blowu Metro and was mightly impressed - check my radio show for the interview with them to be aired in a few weeks).

Hopefully we will be re-running the fun again down the T Bar....NoWave rises like a phoenix from the ashes....surf the sonic tsunami!
